Doug Paterson has been operating Big World Sound for the last 14 years. His background as a musician has given him an excellent foundation to work as a sound designer and producer. Known for having a relaxed but focused demeanour Doug is able to deliver consistent high quality yet cost-effective productions. Early in 2007, Doug worked on the feature length documentary Let It Ride, a film by Jacques Roiseaux, which won Best Film at the Xdance Film Festival and Best Mountain Culture Film at The Whistler Film Festival. Doug was nominated twice at the Leo Awards in 2007 in the Best Sound Editing (short drama) category for Adrien van Viersen’s films Pig Tale, and Tit for Tat. Working on The Agent was an enjoyable challenge—the production sound was a problem because of the environment we shot in. The barn was about 50 metres away from highway 99 with its huge volume of traffic and, of course, noise! We were also directly in the flight path of many jets taking off and landing from Vancouver International Airport. Further complicating matters were the train tracks on the other side of the barn. We certainly had our work cut out for us! One other major problem were the birds inside the barn. Fortunately, the Producer and Director liked the birds so they became an integral part of the sound design. Carl Ragan, whom I have worked with on other films, delivered a wonderful score for the film which certainly made my life easier. Together we melded the sound design and music so that at times it is difficult to know where one ends and the other begins. Working on The Agent was a demanding and exciting project. Director Adrien Van Viersen gave us all a wonderful canvas upon which to paint. |
